Fitness Fridays: Finding the Energy…Bits

Happy Friday!

Lately I have found myself getting more than a few emails about Zumba, food portions, or just general fitness questions. I am absolutely no expert on these topics, but I am feeling more and more confident with my ability to manage my own health and exercise. So with that, I’m bringing back Fitness Fridays!

Today’s topic: Pre-workout Fuel

If you follow me on Instagram (glutenhatesme) or Facebook, then you know that I try to go to Zumba class twice a week. I am IN LOVE with a local instructor (Zumba with Lu) so I make it a priority to attend her classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7pm.

But I work a full-time job! So I leave work and head straight to Zumba. Most days after working 8 or 9 hours, it can be hard to have the energy to work out at night. I am a TOTAL morning workout person, but I love Lu’s class, so I make it happen.

Recently I noticed that I felt draggy in Zumba class, especially if I had completed a tough workout the day before. I started researching Pre-Workouts, or energy powders, that are made to take 20-30 minutes before a workout.

It wasn’t hard to find Pre-Workouts, but it was hard to find a brand that wasn’t full of chemicals and fake sugars. I didn’t feel good about drinking something unhealthy for my body just to be able to do something healthy for my body like Zumba.

I was so excited to receive my Energy Bits in the mail! The day they arrived was actually a really busy day at work where I was flying solo. My 1pm lunch time rolled around, I started feeling the pangs of hunger, but knew I wouldn’t be able to take my lunch break until 3:30. I also felt like I was catching Parrish’s cold – I felt draggy, hungry, and honestly… a bit cranky.

So I thought -  why not try the energy bits! I was sent 75 bits in a super convenient tin:

They’re pressed into the shape of pills, but remember, they’re not pills! They actually are tiny bits of protein, nutrient rich food!

Yes. They are GREEN! I opted to just swallow the bits whole, as I knew that if I chewed them they would definitely taste like algae.

I was able to swallow 5 bits at a time comfortably, and found no aftertaste or lingering “green” taste. I was actually pleasantly surprised that I didn’t taste anything much at all.

30 bits down the hatch, and I was back to work. I didn’t even actually notice that the pills were working until an hour later. I realized that not only did I not feel hungry, but I actually felt energized!

Not a buzzy type of head energy feeling, but instead a “I slept for a full night and feel great” kind of energy. I was crazy productive at work, and had lost the lingering cold feeling I had had that entire day.
