Gluten Hates Me and my hair

I am loving your comments on this post! Please keep sharing your top five lists, and I’m going to compile them for a future post! I’ve already heard of two brands I didn’t even know existed.

*****************

But until then, I have one question: Do you use gluten free shampoo?

Until recently my answer was always, No. I thought I was one of those lucky ones who didn’t have to “go that far”. But a few weeks ago, I noticed something on a small shampoo sample:

hair 005

hair 009

And I started thinking about it.

I have SUPER dry skin. But I just thought I was like most folks in the winter. But then I really started thinking about it…I have really dry skin and a dry scalp…itchy…

What if it’s from gluten?

So TONIGHT I am headed to ULTA to purchase the above shampoo, and I’m going to see if this makes a difference. I’m not sure that my current shampoo has gluten, but I also can’t understand half the ingredients on the bottle.

Thoughts?

I can no longer use shampoo and conditioner that contain gluten. I get really dry skin and a painful rash from it. Thank you for introducing me to something new. I have been using Dove products but would feel better using something clearly marked gluten free.

{head slap} I hadn't even thought about it! I guess I've got tet another reason to go "no 'poo", now!

I recently started having the same issue, to the point where my head hurt all the time. I discovered a full line of shampoo, conditioner, body wash, etc. called Gluten-Free Savonnerie. However, I also have very curly hair & need something for the curl so I have products from Oyin Handmade hopefully being delivered today.

I was using my partner's shampoo for the longest time and I had really bad dandruff, then I took a look at the ingredients and sure enough there was wheat protein.

I would bet money (and I hate gambling) it's the sulfites/sulfates that's drying you out.

Since I avoid chemicals like that, I inadvertantly use shampoo and other products (local, handmade soap and Dr. Bronner's) that are naturally GF.

i don't pay attention actually - but will be curious to see if this helps!

I would be curious to try the shampoo from ULTA. Let us know how you like it! I don't use products marked 'gluten free' but I do avoid harsh ingredients and wheat protein. I like Aubrey Organics chamomile shampoo and conditioner, seabuckthorn soap and lotion; Alba plumeria shampoo and spf lotion; Bert's Bees lip shimmers (I've heard they're gluten free) and body wash. I'm trying to also use products that help my rosacea. There's a whole set of products I like for this condition.

Not sure about my shampoo and conditioner, but I did switch all my makeup and lotions to gluten free and have a lot less dryness and redness. I figure it can't hurt.

i never thought it mattered, because i wasn't eating it. so how could it matter? i purchased some aveno shampoo/conditioner (killer coupon at the time) without reading. a week or so after using it, i got a terrible rash on my neck (shoulder length hair). it would not go away. i thought it was perfume, or a new styling product. one day in the shower i looked closely at the bottles - wheat protein was an ingredient. that was that. stopped using it and the rash went away. so now i don't specifically look for gluten free shampoo/conditioner, but do check the ingredients. i also just watched your accent blog - you are super cute! you sounded more southern that i thought you would.

A couple days ago I bought Renpure moisturizing shampoo, which is gluten free. I love it!!! My hair is bouncy and shiny. I found it at a drugstore for about $7.

yup! i use organix. anything with wheat protein/oats/gluteny junk makes my hair fall out and my skin dry up. i have to make sure all my products are gf otherwise i break out/dry up. and i totally glutened myself for weeks bc of lipgloss with oats in it. NOT cool.
