I Got Glutened

Ugh. I got glutened. I ordered a bowl of soup and asked if it contained any wheat or gluten, the cook said "No." BUT IT DID! This is so frustrating. I mean I guess I'm just going to learn where I can eat out and who I can trust to know their ingredients. I think I'm going to stop asking, "Does it contain any wheat or gluten?" and say "I am highly allergic to any wheat or grain, does this item contain any?"

So sorry to hear that. I always emphasize the fact that I have celiac disease, which makes them pay a little better attention. And I never assume that they know what gluten is.

I have actually had some tell me this: "It's not made from wheat, it's made from flour."

If you know ahead of time where your going to eat it's okay to call ahead and talk to the chef.

Calling ahead is a great idea! I struggle with feeling high maintenance and being direct with the server...I'm hoping I get more comfortable with time!

You should check out Allergic Girl, She's in NYC but she coaches people and families who are dealing with food allergies and other issues about talking to wait-staff, teachers, etc. She really great!

And don't ever feel high maintenance! You are the most important person in your life, and your number one task is to look after yourself and be healthy and happy.

I know it takes some work to get used to it, but it really is important, and helpful.

(And I'm always happy to answer questions, lend support, whatever you need)
